Chapter 20 – History Lesson

At first, Coty thought I was a bit crazy. Oh! He knew not to say it, but when I told him that Pop was okay, he asked how I knew. I replied, “I didn’t feel his pain, and I feel his presence.”

“Do what?” Coty’s eyebrows rose, and his head cocked.

I looked around. “Coty, I would feel his pain if he’d been shot or blown up. Also, I feel him. I don’t know how to explain it, but I’ve always been able to know when Pop was near. His presence grows stronger.”

We continued walking in the dark, following Willow and Jerry. Coty took a deep breath. “I’ve never experienced anything like that, but I do know that you always cheer me up when you enter a room. I trust your senses.”

“Good answer. Coty, I pray every night for this crap to end, but then thoughts come into my head telling me that our family has to make the world a better place.”

“Did you hear that?” I pointed ahead to the bend in the road. “It sounds like a convoy.”

Jerry’s hand rose and signaled us to follow her into the woods along the road. “Shush!” she whispered before I could warn her that we’d be trapped against the steep hillside.

The truck’s engine grew louder and then drove past us. My M4 rose, and I took aim, but Jerry shoved my rifle into the air. “Jamie, don’t shoot. They could be innocent, and if they aren’t, we’d have to kill all of them before they killed us.”

I stomped my feet. “Jerry, we could have ambushed them and taken them out before they knew what hit them.”

“Maybe if we’d all been on the same page. You can’t go rogue and expect everyone to know what you were thinking.”

Damn! She was right. “I’m sorry. You’re right.”

Willow touched her mom’s arm. “They’re a sleeper cell.” What were two truckloads of Chinese men doing in Jackson County? “Mom, what did you make of those men?”

Jerry looked over her shoulder, looking at my furrowed brow and puzzled face. “You are a bit young, but your history class should have covered when the border was wide open for many years?”

I thought back to eighth-grade history class. “All I remember is there was a big fight between the two parties on how to secure the border, but the Democrat, President Billings, got both parties to work on the border. The number of illegals dropped close to zero. He built our wall from the Gulf to the Pacific and built fifty huge immigration compounds to process legal immigrants. They mainly sent the fake asylum seekers back home, which was 90% of the illegal migration. Then he was assassinated by the cartels.”

Willow nodded. “You got it right until who actually killed Billings after he became our first Independent President and joined people from both parties to start a middle of the road party. The deep state New World Order idiots killed him because he’d set their plans back twenty years.
